How to Make Cold Brew Coffee

January 20, 2016

I fell in love with cold brew coffee about a year ago. Before that I could not understand why anyone would ever drink coffee cold. Coffee is supposed to be warm and cozy, right? I’m really not sure what possessed me to try it cold but I did. It was iced coffee and surprisingly I really liked it! From there I moved on to cold brew and I have never looked back! Cold brew is very different from iced coffee. Iced coffee is coffee that was brewed hot and then chilled and poured over ice. To make cold brew you steep coffee grounds in room temperature water for an extended amount of time. Since the coffee beans do not come in contact with heated water you are left with smooth and sweet coffee that is much less acidic than hot brewed coffee.

I started out buying my cold brew from various companies, and I enjoyed that, but living in small town meant that I had to drive an hour and a half away, purchase my cold brew in bulk, and pray that I did’t run out until I went back. I quickly got tired of that and decided to try making it myself.

It is very important to use high quality organic coffee beans. Conventional coffee beans have been bathed in chemicals and pesticides before it reaches your cup. No thank you, organic is the way to go. Then you will need to grind the beans, but leave them coarsely ground. Then pour your grounds into a large bowl. I have an eight cup glass measuring cup that I use as my bowl. Then add your water. I use room temperature bottled water. Stir to make sure all the grounds are covered in water. Cover your bowl and let it sit on your counter for 20-24 hours.

After your coffee has finished steeping you need to use some cheesecloth to strain the coffee grounds. Once your coffee is strained you can bottle it in mason jars and keep it in the refrigerator. It will good to use for several weeks! Play around with how you like to drink it. I like to drink mine at a 1:1 ratio. 1 part coffee to 1 part coconut milk. Look for a post soon on how I like to sweeten my cold brew naturally without adding any creamers or sugar.

5 Things Friday #18

January 8, 2016

It’s finally cold in South Georgia! We had an almost 90 degree Christmas, but around New Year’s it started to feel like winter. Not that I’m complaining, I’m not a huge fan of extreme temperatures either way. I would be happy enjoying 60’s and 70’s all year long. I have had a terrific first week into the new year, and am excited to see what this year has to hold for me and my family.

Friday Favorites

 Jouer Conditioning Lip Treatment

Jouer lip conditioning treatment

I received this sample in one of my Birchboxes and it works great and is especially nice during the winter. I use it at night and my lips stay so soft and moisturized. I just ordered the full size!

Crockpot Sweet Potato Soup

This is Julie’s recipe and I have made it twice over the last month, it is delicious!  I made a couple of tweaks. I sauteed the veggies and I used coconut milk instead of almond.

Love Life

This song kind of sums up my life right now! ๐Ÿ™‚ I listen to it on repeat.

Adagio Teas

Some old favorites and a couple of new ones to try!

Wildflower by Drew Barrymore

Wildflower drew barrymore

I enjoyed this memoir so much. It was thoughtful, insightful, and funny as she shares adventures and challenges of her earlier years and the lessons that have brought her to the happiness that she has now achieved. I liked Drew Barrymore before I read this beautiful story of her life, I now love her!

Share one thing that has made you smile this week.

5 Things Making Me Happy #17

September 4, 2015

Does anyone else feel the shift as we are moving away from summer and a little closer to Fall? Now the temps here in Georgia are definitely no where near Fall like yet but there is something about entering the month of September that feels fresh and new. It has been a fun week for me. I started the week by celebrating my Birthday, the last day of August to be exact. My family did a great job of making me feel extra special. ๐Ÿ™‚ I hope all you guys have had a great week as well!

Here are a few things that have been making me smile this week…

I love making cold brew coffee and also trying any cold brew brands that I find in the store. Trader Joe’s cold brew concentrate caught my eye the other day and I picked some up and I am loving it. I do 1 part cold brew, 1 part water, 1 part coconut milk and a little simple syrup. So good.  Also see that Starbucks cold cup in the photo, well I am loving it too! I’ve had my eye on it all summer but did not really want to spend $23 for it, but they marked them down by 30% about a week ago and I grabbed it!

Cotton Candy Grapes, I’ve heard about these since last summer I looked everywhere and never could find them. I’m happy to say that last week I found them at Kroger! Yay! They are plump, juicy and they do taste like cotton candy!

Dreamette

The best ice cream cone ever! Dreamette is an institution in Jacksonville and also one of it’s best kept secrets! When we lived there we did not even know it existed, but it has been around forever. We have been twice now and both times I have gotten a small vanilla cone dipped in birthday cake and guys it blows my mind! I’ve eaten ice cream in alot of different places but this is my favorite! It’s probably a good thing we did not know about this place when we lived there. ๐Ÿ™‚

21 Day Fix

I am in my 3rd week and I am starting to enjoy the workouts. They are forcing me to do other things besides run. I have a love/hate relationship with weights. You will burn so much more fat when you incorporate weights into your workout. I love to just zone out and run, but lift weights and you will see results (assuming you are also eating a healthy diet.) The first week of the Fix I was sore, the second week I felt stronger, and the third week I am seeing results! Awesome experience!

5 Things Making Me Happy #16

August 14, 2015

Hi Friends, here we are again at Friday! How has your week been? Any fun weekend plans?

I’m starting the 21 Day Fix tomorrow and I am excited! I feel as though I eat healthy most of the time so that part will not be that different for me but the 21 Day Fix really helps you to be more mindful of your portions and how much you are eating and making sure you get a good balance of foods. I am also excited to do the workouts. I usually always default to running or some kind of Hiit workout, it will be nice to shake it up a little. Not to mention being motivated by others on the team.

Now on to some of my favorite things from this week….

Breaking Bad

Breaking Bad

First I cannot believe I waited so long to give this show a shot. Jim watched it from the beginning and it quickly became his all time favorite. I honestly just wasn’t interested in it and never watched a single episode until this summer. It actually turned out to be a good thing because I’ve been watching it on Netflix and I can watch as many episodes as I want instead of watching them 1 at a time. I mean how boring is that?! Point is it’s a fantastic show if you are like me, one of the crazies that didn’t get in on it at the beginning DO SO NOW! On a sad note I’m on the last season and will be going through withdrawals soon! ๐Ÿ™

Turmeric Root

Turmeric Root

Why is this exciting you ask? Well I can now find this at my local grocery store, which is helpful since I use it daily! You see I live in a small town where I have to travel close to 2 hrs to go to Whole Foods, Trader Joes, The Fresh Market, etc…you get my point. So this convenience is nice and kind of made my day. ๐Ÿ™‚

This ChapStick

ChapStick

I have been out of this for a few months and remembered to pick one up yesterday. I had forgotten how much I love this. Out of all the ChapSticks it is definitely my favorite.

Marie Callender’s Peach Pie

peach pie

Let me explain this one. I’ve never really been a pie person. When I eat sweets I usually gravitate towards cookies, brownies, and cake. Several weeks ago while I was in Atlanta we went to Shack Shack and I got their Peach Pie Concrete. They get the pie they mix into the concrete from a local restaurant in Atlanta and OMG was it amazing. So good I got it 2 days in a row. Anyway, since then peach pie has kind of become my thing. The other night I was really craving it and I didn’t have hours to actually make one myself. I did a quick search to see what would be the best one I could buy and that, my friends, is how I found Marie Callender’s  Peach Pie. It is fantastic. The crust is my absolute favorite part. Yum!
